A Dallas Atheist

Atheist not allowed to celebrate Christmas?

A Christian told me a while back, that I had no right to be celebrating with my family on Christmas because I was an atheist and that celebrating it was "against the original intent of the holiday" so I had no right to celebrate on Christmas. I didn't really know how to respond at the time as I thought it was ridiculous for someone to say and just said that I celebrate time with my family and my appreciation for them. She told me that this wasn't right and that I should do it on another day.... Someone recently made a good point to me and said, "Show me in the bible where it requires you to cut down a pine tree, decorate it with shiny balls and tinsel, decorate your house with lights and to trick your kids into thinking that there is a fat man in a red suit who is going to give them presents if they are good." That made a whole lot of sense to me that Christmas is not celebrated these days as was originally intended anyways and has become more of a celebration of friends and family and showing your appreciation towards them through gift giving. Now if we wanted to get technical, I could have gotten mad and trounced her with the history of Christmas and its pagan origins, but I instead took the high road and just let it go. Tis the season to be giving and sharing right? So where'd her holiday spirit go?

 Welcome!

I am an atheist...yes an atheist (is your head spinning yet?) :p Now although I am starting this blog, it is not so much for the purposes of debate, but rather the exchanging of ideas and giving insight into what an atheist really thinks, feels, etc. because there is a very bad stigma attached to the word atheist and in general atheists are judged as something they are not. I've heard that atheists beleive in nothing, that they have no purpose in life, I've heard they have no morales, are Satan worshipers (lol on this one), and that they are severely stupid, misled, untrustworthly....the list goes on and on. I can tell you, that this is just not true on any level with any group, not just atheists and it is not fair to judge an entire group with based upon a difference of opinion. Any person should judge someone based on an individual basis after learning their true views and not just judging them before you know them. I've been guilty of this myself on occasion, but always try not to pre-judge. Even so, I am human and make mistakes like anyone else. Now personally, I am really not that different from anyone else, in fact, if you put me in a group of Christians, you would not be able to pick me out as the atheist of the group. I live a very fruitful, morale life, I am just not religious and do not believe in anything that requires faith. I believe in evidence, natural laws and of course..science. With that having been said, I would hold up my morales and my lifes work proudly against any Christians. Yet I get judged by Christians on sooo many occasions. I really wonder sometimes, where did this stigma come from and why do atheists have such a bad rap?
